Finance Assistant at Sensations International Ltd with experience in Accounts Payable, Credit Control, Payroll/HR, VAT submissions and Cashflow planning/forecasting. Finance Assistant

Sensations International Ltd/Xpress Yourself LLP

Sensations/Xpress Yourself is a publishing company producing and distributing greeting cards, gifts, balloons and party in the UK and internationally. The main details of the jobs I perform can be seen by clicking the buttons below. They are as follows:

Accounting Reconciliation Regularly reconcile Purchase, Sales and Nominal Ledger transactions to ensure figures are correct to pass onto accountant for year-end accounts
Credit Control Used the Sales Ledger to call customers for payment of overdue invoices and deal with customer queries over the phone. Processed customer receipts against customer accounts.
Payroll Use Sage 50 Payroll to assist processing payroll monthly. Action BACS payments and email payslips to employees. Use timesheets to make necessary additions/deductions. Provide Legal & General with pension contributions. Also assist with weekly timesheet submissions for temporary staff
VAT Submit quarterly VAT returns using MTD approved software (Sage 50 Accounts) and process VAT payments in a timely manner.
Cashflow Use Sage 50 figures to budget and forecast annual cashflow on rolling budget basis in Excel.

Accounts Payable Input supplier invoice & credit notes on Sage. Cross-checked invoices and credit notes with statements. Assisted with highlighting suppliers to be included in the bi-weekly payment run.
Credit Control Called independent retailers for payment of overdue invoices. Processed, BACS card payments and cheques against customer accounts

Downstream Planning and Appraisal (Finance) Intern

Royal Dutch Shell plc

During this 3 week work experience, I had the opportunity to get an insight into Shell's finacial department. The main skills I gained from this experience were as follows:

Planning Assisted 2 senior leaders in Shell to organise a team meeting with participants from Chennai (India) and London. I also wrote the minutes of this meeting and emailed it to all of the members in the Downstream Planning and Appraisal Team. I received positive feedback from both this meeting and the minutes.
Microsoft Excel Created an archive of confidential data using Excel that is used regularly by my placement team.
Industry Insight Shadowed a number of people in my placement team where I was an observer during many international conference calls. Witnessed how specialist accounting and finance software is used in the oil and gas industry such as SFS (for management accoutning purposes) and Garance (for financial reporting purposes).

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD)

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is an education and training charity/organisation who desires to widen the access to dance locally and worldwide. I worked with the Head of Finance to update the Finance Manual that will be regularly used within the Finance Team. The main skills I gained from this experience were as follows:

Collaboration Worked with the Head of Finance to update the Finance Policy Manual by comparing RAD’s current internal control procedures with those recommended by Charity’s Commissions (CC8) and provided recommendations on aspects that were added to the Finance Manual.
Redesign Made the manual more user-friendly by adding an interactive contents page so that employees can quickly jump to the relevant part of the manual that contains the policy they need a deeper understanding/explanation on.

IntoUniversity Buddy Day Leader

My job as an IntoUniversity Buddy Leader was to welcome a group of young people to LSE to help them understand more about Higher Education. We led the students on a planned campus tour before delivering an engaging "Dragon's Den" workshop designed in collaboration with IntoUniversity staff. The main skills I gained from this experience were as follows:

Planning Coordinated the session that LSE held with 30 (Year 8) students to help them get a better insight into what life is like at a university such as LSE. The session which I suggested we should run was a “Dragon’s Den” type session to educate students about business. The event proved very successful.
Communication Maintained the link between the IntoUniversity staff and the LSE volunteers so that the sessions ran efficiently.

Maple Leaf Trust Project

The Maple Leaf Trust fund is a charity that supports UK based Canadians (scholars and veterans). I worked in a team with 3 other people to create a handbook that was presented to the Maple Leaf Trust Board. The main skills I gained from this experience were as follows:

Reasearch Undertook research to help create a handbook that was presented to the MLT Board in Summer 2014 advising MLT about how to improve their Board development and internal financial controls. The handbook was produced ahead of the deadline given. .
Consultancy Contributed to outlining recommendations for the handbook, which included improving overall accounting procedures, switching to an online banking system and ensuring that decisions and processes are documented for a clean audit trail.

Positions of responsibility at LSE

LSESU BF

During my 3rd year at LSE, I was elected to take on the position of President. The main duties of my role are summarised as follows:
  • Responsible for leading, planning and coordinating not just the society generally but also events for the upcoming academic year.
  • Delegated tasks to other members of my committee, liaised with corporate companies and the National Bright Futures Organization.
  • Organised events with:
    • Bank of England (BoE): A trading game that educated students about what it is like to trade in a central bank. All 27 attendees were invited to attend a BoE insight day.
    • AIG: An informal free cocktails and canapés event in London with an AIG HR representative who educated students about the insurance industry and AIG’s culture.
    • Financial Conduct Authority (FCA): A mock assessment center which gave 30 students the skills to perform well in this part of the application process.

During my 2nd year at LSE, I was elected to take on the position of Secetary. The main duties of my role are summarised as follows:
  • Managed the relationship between members and the committee.
  • Promoted a BoE Trading game event which had a great turnout.
  • Organised a skills workshop event for our members with Teach First.

My main duty in this role was to assist the executive committee in promoting a number of events such as the financial industries panel.

LSESU Accounting Soc

During my 2nd year at LSE, I was elected to take on the position of Secetary. The main duties of my role are summarised as follows
  • Responsible for managing the relationship between our members and the committee.
  • Promoted and managed an ICAEW Case Study event for our members. The feedback received from the host after the event included a commendation on achieving a great turnout.
  • Gave a presentation promoting the Accounting Society to over 150 parents and 6th formers during the LSE offer holders day in April 2013.

LSESU BF

Throughout my 3 years of studying at LSE, I was elected as a Student representative. The main duties of my role are summarised as follows:
  • Gathered and represented the views of students on the BSc Accounting and Finance program to the Accounting department in meetings and suggested solutions to problems raised during the meetings to ensure that student voices are being heard and acted upon.
  • Reported back to students after the committee meetings via Social Media and email so that students were aware that changes were taking place in matters they desired to be discussed at meetings.

Cosplay

Since 2016, I've picked up a hobby called cosplay. This is the practice of dressing up as a character from a film, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga, anime or games. Below are some examples of characters that I have cosplayed.

Other Facts

  • I have a full, clean UK driving license
  • During Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee in July 2002, I wrote and received a letter in reply from her Majesty's Lady in Waiting.
  • I am an avid listener to Rock music and Melodic Metal. My favourite bands are Skillet, Theocracy, Red, Evanescence and Three Days Grace. I also enjoy going to see these artists live in concert.
  • My favourite anime is Death Note and my favourite game series is Kingdom Hearts.
  • In 2006 and 2007, I represented my secondary school in local sports competitions where I won a bronze and silver medal for relay and long jump respectively.
  • I love watching shows in the West End. I've had the pleasure of seeing over 15 amazing shows with more booked over the coming months.
  • I enjoy going to theme parks such as Chessington World of Adventures, Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.
